Where does black oak come from?
Black oak is formed when oak trunks fall into swamps, rivers, or other moist environments and undergo the process of subfosilization. This process, lasting from a few hundred to even tens of thousands of years, involves the slow preservation of wood under anaerobic conditions. The lack of oxygen and high humidity protect the wood from decay, while minerals from the surrounding environment penetrate its structure, giving it a characteristic black color and increased hardness. Sometimes, fragments of black oak can be found in riverbeds, on the shores of lakes, or in peat bogs, and their age can be estimated by radiocarbon dating. The oldest finds are even 12,000 years old.
Black oak is an extremely rare material, making it one of the most valuable types of wood in the world. Its extraction is complicated because finding and extracting entire trunks requires specialized equipment and enormous effort.
